Seedhead In Kansas City Lawns

If you're a homeowner in Kansas City, Lee’s Summit, Liberty, or anywhere in the surrounding areas, you might be looking at your lawn right now wondering, “Why does my grass look like it's full of weeds?” Don't worry—you’re not alone!

Every spring, we get tons of calls at Turf Geeks from folks thinking their fescue or Kentucky bluegrass lawns have been invaded by weeds. But what you’re likely seeing are grass seed heads, not weeds.

🌱 Why Do Fescue and Bluegrass Lawns Produce Seed Heads?

Both tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass, common turf types across Kansas City lawns, naturally produce seed heads in the spring. It’s simply part of their life cycle. When temperatures rise and days get longer, your grass shifts energy into reproduction—sending up seed heads.

These seed heads can make your lawn look uneven, thin, or even weedy, but they’re perfectly normal!

✂️ What Should You Do About Seed Heads?

  1. Keep Mowing Properly: Don’t scalp your lawn trying to cut them off—stick to mowing at the right height (3-4 inches for fescue and bluegrass).

  2. Sharpen Your Mower Blades: Seed stems are tougher than regular grass blades, so dull blades will tear the grass.

  3. Fertilize Smart: A balanced fertilization plan helps your lawn stay healthy and recover after the seed head cycle.

  4. Stay Hydrated: Consistent watering helps reduce stress and keeps your lawn looking lush.

🌾 Will These Seed Heads Grow New Grass?

Unfortunately, no. The seed heads from turf-type fescue and bluegrass aren’t typically viable in a home lawn setting. So, if you have bare spots or thinning areas, you’ll still want to plan for overseeding—and remember, fall is the best time for that in Kansas City!
